Matthew A. Cherry Signs First-Look Deal with Warner Bros. and Sets Feature Directorial Project with New Line

Four months after he won an Academy Award for his animated short film Hair Love, filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry has big plans with exciting new projects inked for film and television.

Within days of each other, the ICM Partners’ client signed a multi-year first-look development deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, and a deal to direct The Come Up, an original feature to be produced by New Line, a film division under Warner Bros. as well.

Under the TV deal, Cherry will develop programming for both cable and streaming platforms. He will produce the new series via his company, Cherry Lane Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television, Warner Horizon Scripted Television, Warner Bros. Animation or Blue Ribbon Content, depending on the platform.

“I am beyond excited to be joining the Warner Bros. Television family in this exciting new capacity,” Cherry, a former NFL player, said. “It’s an important time to be a Black creative working in this industry, and I look forward to creating impactful projects and partnering with other talented marginalized voices in our community.”

The Come Up has been described as a comedic heist, Friday meets Oceans 11. Following the news of the project, Cherry tweeted that he is “excited to bring some Black joy to the big screen.”

We are pleased to congratulate Cherry on his recent accomplishments!
