Netflix Releases First Look at Shonda Rhimes’ “Bridgerton”

Earlier this week, Netflix released footage from the highly anticipated upcoming drama series Bridgerton, the first Shondaland content to premiere on the streaming service as part of its history-making deal with ICM Partners client Shonda Rhimes.

Bridgerton, which is adapted from Julia Quinn’s series of eight best-selling novels, revolves around Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the oldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market. Simon Bassett plays the male lead at the center of the aristocratic social world, and Academy Award winner Julie Andrews voices Lady Whistledown, the unseen gossip writer who narrates the show.

In her October cover story with The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes recalled, “I was almost scaring people, like, ‘We have to get these crazy romance novels — they’re hot and they’re sexy and they’re really interesting.”

Rhimes’ production company Shondaland is producing the series as part of the overall deal she signed with Netflix in 2017. Bridgerton will premiere on December 25, 2020.
