Spotlight on Grain Media

The London-based production company Grain Media has been conquering award season with their critically acclaimed documentary short film Learning to Skateboard In a Warzone (If You’re A Girl).

The 39-minute short film, directed by Carol Dysinger, tells the story of young Afghan girls who attend the Skateistan school in Kabul, where they learn to skateboard, lean in to their courage, and thrive beyond the many barriers that restrict the lives of so many women in Afganistan.

“I have never in my life seen kids that were so hungry to learn and just so happy to learn, because they know it’s not a given and they like being engaged with their minds,” Dysinger told Deadline earlier this year. The Academy Award-winning director also added that if not for Skatistan, “the girls would be very much in the house around the women helping out, hanging onto skirts, trying not to be bored and taking care of the boys or the babies, whichever there are more of or who needs it.”

The documentary film has moved audiences around the globe, as evidenced by its myriad of award nominations and wins. The short film received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary (Short Subject), and has already picked up a Bafta Award for Best British Short Film, as well as awards from the Tribeca Film Festival, the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival, and the International Documentary Association for Best Documentary Short.Grain Media was started by Orlando Von Einsiedel with the goal of making films, television shows and commercials that champion extraordinary characters whose intimate stories speak to macro issues. ICM Partners is proud to work with and support Grain Media’s endeavors to tell inspiring narratives that cast a spotlight on global issues.

We wish them the best of luck at the upcoming Academy Awards.
